Craigslist: A Fount of Knowledge

I wasted the day reading You Suck at Craigslist, a site devoted to showcasing the worst Craigslist ads. Well, it wasn’t an entire waste: I learned two interesting facts.

First, selling used caskets is “very, very illegal.” How do you define “very, very illegal?” In some states, selling even a new casket without a funeral director’s license is punishable by fines and jail time. Even funeral directors cannot sell a used casket because fluids leaking from the corpse make it a biohazard. I couldn’t find the specific penalty for selling a used casket, however.

The other thing I learned was the term “plurale tantum.” This word refers to words that always appear as plural, such as “pants,” “scissors,” and “electronics.” It has a sister term, “singulare tantum,” which refers to words that always appear as singular, such as “happiness,” “dust,” and “underwear.”
